Just two years ago she became the winner of “American Idol,” now Jordin Sparks is spending her summer on the road with one of the world’s hottest pop acts, The Jonas Brothers, and is getting ready to release her sophomore album. Yet it all came pretty close to never happening.
In 2006, Sparks auditioned for “American Idol” twice. At her first audition in Los Angeles, Sparks never made it past the producers of the show. Determined to make it, she tried again in Seattle and got to perform for Simon, Paula and Randy. Clearly they liked what they heard because she made it all the way to the Top 10, where America chose to make her their “Idol.”
Once she was off the “Idol” stage, Jordin got even bigger. Her first four singles cracked the Billboard Top 20 and her debut album sold more than 1.5 million copies worldwide. She also entertained for some major crowds, performing for Diana Ross at the 30th annual Kennedy Center Honors, singing the National Anthem at Super Bowl XLII and performing for President Bush at his welcome to the U.S. Ambassador’s Residence in Accra, Ghana. And that was just 2008.
In 2009, Sparks has performed for President Obama at his Inaugural Ball and earned her first Grammy nomination. She also started work on her sophomore album, “Battlefield,” which will be released July 21.
For her latest effort, Sparks has given fans a more R&B and dance influenced album than her self-titled debut. She’s also worked with artists like Jesse McCartney, T-Pain and Ryan Tedder on the project she had much more input on, even co-writing some of the tracks. Plus, her first track is getting rave reviews.
The title track to “Battlefield” is already being called the single of 2009, and its only July. AngryApe.com said “the subtle intro does nothing to prepare you for the epic, stadium-sized chorus,” adding “without question, this will be a No. 1 for Sparks.”
The song is already climbing the charts and is performed as a duet with the Jonas Brothers on their tour. So for fans checking out the shows at the TD Banknorth Garden this Friday and Saturday night, look for “Battlefield” to be performed with Kevin on guitar, Nick playing drums and Joe singing along with Jordin Sparks.
